I'd avoid the 4 cylinder, but anything with a 6 should be good. Depending on the year/engine combo, should have plenty of hp.

  • Audi Q5: I prefer wagons over SUVs, personally, but I would consider.
  • Pricey, sure, but may be worth it for the tech.
  • Audi Allroad: I've enjoyed driving them.
  • If you don't need this much room, probably not worth it.
  • Toyota Highlander V6: Good power, but also bigger than an OB.
  • It's a Jag, so you'll most likely have the opportunity to get to know your mechanic very, very well. Probably don't want to take it "off road," but unimproved roads will likely be fine. Every time I see one on the road it takes 3 days to talk myself out of getting one. Tech is generally sub-par, but sweet Jesus, it's a good looking car.
  • Jaguar XF Sportbrake S: Sweet spot for power and driving dynamics are supposed to be great.
  • Gets a bit more horsepower and some other "performance" upgrades. That said if the V60 is big enough, look for a used model with the Polestar package.
  • V90 Volvo T6: I don't think the V60 is the right comparison to the OB, it's too small.
  • You can keep in the $40k range, if you consider used. A car this size needs 300+ hp, if you really want to drive it. Even with it, I think it's underpowered (3.6R owner here, I think even that is underpowered). You're going to be unhappy without the turbo. Open to reconsidering most any of these if someone has a sales pitch for it or my assessments were off.īase engine on the Outback is a slug. I liked it overall, but 20 mph cutoff for honda sensing was dealbreaker. Passport: Price is kind of high for what you get, esp. RAV4-Prime: Was willing to forego real off road in exchange for the plug in features, but high prices offset any real savings from EV. Jeep Cherokee/Renegade: Trailhawk elite package would fit nicely, but cramped on storage, FCA reliability. Not sure about parts/service availability.Ĥ-Runner: seems like it would be a punishing daily driver, hard to justify paying that much for old tech/old platform. Volvo V60: Haven’t tested but seems like a much worse value proposition than Outback. Transit Connect: I really wanted to make this one work as an off the beaten path adventuremobile (especially when the diesel was a potential), and was willing to forego off-road, but did not seem ideal for road trips. VW Alltrack - Discontinued, wasn’t impressed driving it, VW reliabilityīuick Tour X - options packages got too expensive, discontinuedįorester: doesn’t have same touring trim features, cargo is all vertical spaceĪudi Allroad: Pricey, seems expensive for what it is. Vehicles considered: Wrangler Unlimited - too expensive, steers like a boat Intended use: Road trips to western US national parks, moderate off road if possibleįeatures desired: Automatic cruise control w/ low speed follow (must have), ventilated sets, generous cargo storage, AWD/4WD.

Want to see if there might be anything else with a little more to put a smile on my face before I buy. I like the non-turbo Outback Touring on paper and behind the wheel for the most part, but it doesn’t do much to excite.
